The Estonian Marine Institute is a contemporary scientific institution. The main purpose of the Marine Institute is research to enhance the knowledge and understanding of the Marine sphere in Estonia and the Baltic Sea region.We are one of the biggest marine organizations in Estonia and  wa contribute to research in several marine study fields. Our research ranges from sea water physics to biology, from microscopic scale to full ecosystems, having unique expert opinions and qualifications in most Marine research fields.

The active progress of marine sciences in Estonia in the last decades has increased the awareness of Estonian science around the Baltic Sea region and also in Europe. The Estonian Marine Institute also collaborates with scientists and specialists from all around the world to conduct high level marine research. Estonian marine scientists have been very successful at the international level as the number of high-rated scientific publications and international projects continually increases. On the other hand, a significant part of the marine research is focused on solving the local scientific problems, which are important for Estonia.

The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission – also known as the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) – is an intergovernmental organization and a regional sea convention in the Baltic Sea area, consisting of ten Contracting Parties, namely Denmark, Estonia, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. It the governing body of the “Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area,” also known as the Helsinki Convention.

HELCOM is a platform for environmental policy making at the regional level, it was established about four decades ago to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea from all sources of pollution through intergovernmental cooperation. The vision for the future is a healthy Baltic Sea environment with diverse biological omponents functioning in balance, resulting in a good ecological status and supporting a wide range of sustainable economic and social activities.

The Water Centre for Innovation (UCV) is a sub-department of Campus Roslagen AB in Norrtälje Municipality, Sweden. The Maritime Institute is the R&D organization under Gdynia Maritime University with 67 years of experience and over 200 employees.
